On February 19, 1894, Detective James Kauhane, along with Detective Herman Kaouli, was following up on an informant’s tip that opium was being smuggled in on a foreign ship moored at Brewer’s dock. The two detectives located the male and were attempting to arrest him when a physical altercation ensued. During the struggle, the suspect pulled out a knife and slashed both officers several times. Despite being wounded, the detectives were able to overpower the male and place him under arrest.

Detective Kauhane passed away two days later due to complications from his injuries.
