How do I Commend an Officer

The Honolulu Police Department is very proud of its employees, both civilian and sworn, especially when they go beyond the call of duty, as they so frequently do.  If you have witnessed an officer or civilian employee who has exemplified our motto of “Serving and Protecting with Aloha,” then we would like to hear about it. 

Letters of appreciation should describe the location and events of the incident along with the officer’s name and badge number (if available). In all cases, the employee and his or her supervisor are made aware of the outstanding performance and a copy of the recognition is placed in the employees personnel file.

Although our employees do not expect to be thanked for serving the community, recognition of exceptional service is always appreciated.

How do I Check my Criminal History

The Honolulu Police Department does not issue criminal history records. These records are also known as police abstracts, police certificates or police clearances in other jurisdictions.

How do I file a Complaint on an Officer

Complaints against police officers are investigated by the Honolulu Police Commission, HPD's Professional Standards Office, or Human Resources Division depending upon the circumstances. See below for details.

Professional Standards Office

If a complaint involves any of the following, contact the HPD Professional Standards Office:

A notarized statement is required as part of the police union's collective bargaining agreement. Links to the forms are listed here under the Professional Standards Office section.

If you wish to remain anonymous, your complaint will be reviewed and/or investigated in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and departmental policy.

You may mail a notarized statement to the above address or you may appear in person and a statement will be taken by a Professional Standards Office detective and notarized at that time. Be sure to bring a proper identification card (state ID, driver's license, passport, etc.).

If the complaint is criminal in nature, you may call 911 and have a police officer sent to your location. The officer will initiate the complaint for you and forward it to the Criminal Investigation Section of the Professional Standards Office. You may come to the Professional Standards Office and a complaint will be initiated for you by a Professional Standards Office detective.

How do I setup a House Check

The Honolulu Police Department conducts house checks for vacationing residents upon request.  House checks help with protecting property and the early detection of burglary, vandalism, and other crimes.  House checks are always conducted by uniformed officers.


How Do I Sign Up?

To request a house check, call 911 and ask for the police, non-emergency line.

What If My Schedule Changes?

Residents who return home early must contact the Honolulu Police Department by calling 911 to cancel the house check request. An officer will be sent to the residence to verify the cancellation.

Alarm Tracking and Billing Outsourcing

Q. I received a notification letter from the Honolulu Police Department Alarm Tracking and Billing Unit regarding the outsourcing of its registration and tracking functions. Is there anything I have to do?

A. No. The notification letter regarding the outsourcing to the Public Safety Corporation is for informational purposes only, it is not a bill nor do you need to submit a new permit application.

Q. Do I have to re-register my alarm permit?

A. No. If you already have a permit with the Honolulu Police Department, you will not need to obtain a new one from the Public Safety Corporation. Only new accounts will need to register.

Q. Will my current alarm permit be transferred to the Public Safety Corporation?

A. Yes. Your permit will be transferred to the Public Safety Corporation at the end of the transition period. Your current permit expiration date will remain the same. Fines and fees will also remain the same.

Q. Where do I mail my documents and payments?

A. Documents and payments can be mailed to the Honolulu False Alarm Reduction Program at P.O. Box 29610, Honolulu, Hawaii 96820-2010. Make checks payable to the City and County of Honolulu.

Q. Will the Honolulu Police Department still be servicing alarm calls?

A. Yes. The Honolulu Police Department will continue to respond to all alarm calls on Oahu.

Q. When will the Public Safety Corporation take over the Honolulu Police Department Alarm Tracking and Billing Unit registration and tracking functions?

A. We anticipate the change over to be soon. The Public Safety Corporation online services will be available after the transition phase is completed. We will update you on our website (honolulupd.org) when the change over is completed.
