Ask HPD: Speed limits

02/19/2014

Q: Can you receive a ticket for driving too slow?

A. Excessively low speed can be a dangerous situation for everyone using the freeway. Aside from bad weather, unsafe traffic conditions, or lawful instruction, drivers on the freeway can get cited for travelling under the posted minimum speed carrying a fine of $82; again this is if a minimum posted speed sign exists. If there isn't a posted minimum speed, drivers who are travelling 5 miles or more under the speed limit on any roadway must use the extreme right lane on a multiple lane roadway leaving the left lanes open to faster moving traffic. Vehicles travelling at an excessively low speed under the posted speed limit not using the extreme right lane could face a fine of $97.
