Ask HPD: Communicating in a different language

Q. English is the second language for many of my family members. I want to know what happens if there's an emergency and they need to report it to police. Are there police interpreters?

A. Honolulu is a melting pot of cultures and languages. To keep everyone safe it is important that our officers effectively communicate with the different members of our community. We have a list of employees within the department that can speak different languages. If a translation is needed, our 911 dispatchers will try to locate the employee who can speak the particular language. There are times where we may also use a language line service to assist us.
