Ask HPD: Parking Within Intersections

Q. "I received a parking ticket while parked within a "T" type intersection. I've parked there for years. There was no DO NOT PARK sign posted and the sidewalk is not marked red. Cars have been parking there for years. Was my car parked illegally?"

A. Lee Ann, it is illegal to park within an intersection. The law does not require a sign to be posted. Other common areas that don't require DO NOT PARK signs and are illegal to park are....

- within 30 feet of a stop sign,

- on or within 20 feet of a crosswalk,

- within ten feet of a fire hydrant,

- and in the turnaround area of any dead end street.

The fine for parking in an intersection is $35.
