Ask HPD: Dark Tint

Question: Can I get a ticket for having too dark tint on a car that I just bought?

Answer: Yes, you must ensure that the window tint on your vehicle is in compliance with the law. Even though the vehicle may be newly purchased, you are still responsible for the compliance. On all types of vehicles, tint is only allowed on the top four inches of the front windshield. For sedans, the law requires that each window allow more than 35% of light in. For vans and SUVs, the front two side windows must allow more than 35% of light in. Other side and rear windows may have any darkness. Vehicle owners can be fined $287 for a violation of this law.
