Ask HPD: Bicyclist Traveling in Opposite Direction

Question: I was driving down a one-way street and a bicyclist was riding in the opposite direction. Is this legal?

Answer: Traffic laws apply to everyone on the road including bicyclists. It is against the law for the bicyclist to travel against the flow of traffic on a one-way street. Violators may be cited. One exception is the protected bike lane located on South King Street. In that lane, bicyclists are allowed to travel in both directions from Alapai Street to University Avenue.
