Ask HPD: Being a Good Witness

Question: If a crime takes place, how can I be a good witness?

Answer: Crimes are frequently solved with solid information from witnesses. A good witness is observant to details. For example, good witnesses focus on the criminal's characteristics like gender, height, weight, and eye, and hair color. Check to see if the suspect has scars, tattoos, piercings, even moles. A good witness will also take note of the suspect's clothing, voice, accent, and mannerisms. Having a good description of the weapon used is also important. If a suspect flees from the scene, pay attention to the direction the suspect headed, and if it was on foot or some other mode of flight. If vehicles were involved, get the color and description. It's also good to get the vehicle's license plate number. A good witness is also someone who is cooperative with investigators and is willing to testify in court.
