Update 1/25/24: Shortly before 9 p.m., HPD officers arrested a 29-year-old male in the Nimitz area for second-degree attempted murder. Charges will be sought with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney.
Original Post: The Honolulu Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect accused of throwing a chemical substance on a woman near Ala Moana Center.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at approximately 9:15 p.m. Based on the initial investigation, the 25-year-old victim told witnesses that she was walking near Planet Fitness when an unknown male threw an unknown liquid on her, causing her skin and clothes to burn. The victim ran into Planet Fitness for help, where witnesses assisted her until paramedics arrived. The victim sustained severe burns to her body and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The suspect was observed fleeing the scene on foot toward Kapiolani Boulevard. He is described as a male in his 20s, approximately 5’8” tall, 160 to 180 pounds, with a medium build. Initially, the suspect was wearing a black hooded jacket, camouflage pants, and a white face mask. Shortly after the incident, the suspect was seen on Kapiolani Boulevard where another individual handed him a bicycle. The suspect was last seen shirtless with a black backpack riding the bicycle on Kapiolani Boulevard toward the Hawaii Convention Center.
The case is classified as second-degree attempted murder and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
