On August 12, 2024 at about 1:44 P.M. a motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred in the intersection of South King Street and Elsie Lane in the McCully Area
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Division, that a 73-year -old male moped operator was traveling eastbound, within the protected bike lane, on South King Street, when the 73-year-old operator lost control and slid-out on the roadway.
As a result of the incident, the 73-year-old moped operator was injured and transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in serious condition.
The 73-year-old male moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
On August 13, 2024, at about 12:01 AM, the Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 73-year-old male moped rider had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This is the 27th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 36 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
