On August 18, 2024, at about 7:04 PM, a serious hit-and-run motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Waialae Avenue, east of Palolo Avenue, in the Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a male motorist, who has yet to be identified, was traveling westbound on Waialae Avenue, when he broadsided a 26-year-old male moped rider, who was exiting the driveway of Kaimuki McDonald’s. The force of the collision ejected the moped rider onto the roadway causing injury.
After the collision, the unidentified motorist continued to travel westbound on Waialae Avenue, with the moped wedged under the front end of his vehicle. The moped was later dislodged from the vehicle’s undercarriage near 2903 Kaimuki Avenue (Crane Community Park). The unidentified motorist then continued to flee the area without rendering aid or providing information. The unidentified motorist was driving a gray Toyota Corolla.
As a result of the collision, the moped rider was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in serious condition.
The moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, it is unknown if speed, drugs, or alcohol are factors in this collision.
