On September 7, 2024, at about 3:44 AM, a fatal single motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of Leokane Street and Pupuole Street in the Waipahu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 20-year-old male motorist and his 20-year-old male passenger were traveling northbound on Leokane Street at a high rate of speed, lost control, and collided with a wooden utility pole.
As a result of the collision, the 20-year-old passenger was transported via Emergency Medical Service to an area hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 20-year-old passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.
The 20-year-old motorist sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.
The 20-year-old motorist was subsequently placed under arrest for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and Negligent Homicide in the First Degree.
At this time, speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors of this collision. It is unknown if drugs are a contributing factor.
This is the 30th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 39 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
