On October 2, 2024, at about 9:15 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision, involving a single motor vehicle, occurred on the H-3 East Freeway, west of Likelike Highway.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 39-year-old male motorist was traveling eastbound on the H-3 Freeway at a high rate of speed when it struck a guardrail.
The 39-year-old male motorist continued on before traveling off the roadway onto the shoulder and then up a grass embankment and overturning several times ejecting the 39-year-old male motorist.
The vehicle continued on and traveled down a second grass embankment where it collided with a utility pole before coming to final rest.
As a result of the collision, the utility pole was dislodged and fell onto the roadway impeding traffic.
The 39-year-old male motorist was transported to an area hospital in critical condition by Emergency Medical Services, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The male motorist was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed, and alcohol appear to be contributing factors of this collision. It is unknown if drugs are a factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
