On December 14, 2024, at about 4:35 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving two pedestrians occurred on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch in the Kaaawa area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 40-year-old male motorist and his two juvenile passengers were traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway, when one of the juvenile passengers began to experience a medical emergency. As the 40-year-old male motorist assisted his juvenile passenger, his vehicle drifted in to the right shoulder where it side-swiped an unoccupied pick-up truck and collided into a 20-year-old male pedestrian and a juvenile female pedestrian, who were walking within the right shoulder.
As a result of the collision, the 20-year-old male pedestrian and the juvenile female pedestrian were transported to an area hospital in critical condition by Emergency Medical Services.
The 40-year-old male motorist remained at the scene and refused medical treatment. His two juvenile passengers were uninjured.
At this time speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
