On December 14, 2024, at about 11:50 PM, a motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle with two occupants occurred on Kamehameha Highway near Puhuli Street, in the Punaluu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 19-year-old male motorist and his 20-year-old male front seat passenger was traveling southbound on Kamehameha Highway, when the 19-year-old male motorist lost control of his vehicle and traveled off of the roadway and collided with a fire hydrant and several trees alongside the roadway.
As a result of the collision, the 19-year-old male motorist was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in good condition. The 20-year-old male front seat passenger was not injured.
Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision
On December 19, 2024, the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section was notified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office that the 19-year-old male motorist involved in this collision had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
At this time, speed appears to be a factor in this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors in this collision.
This is the 48th Traffic Fatality of 2024 as compared to 54 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation remains on-going.
