The HPD Sex Crimes Detail investigates felony and misdemeanor reports of sexual assaults that occur anywhere on the Island of Oahu. A detective from the detail is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to the scene of a reported sexual assault. Detectives will also respond to the Sex Abuse Treatment Center’s acute exam site at the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children when a crisis case is reported to police there.
Our detectives are trauma informed and victim focused. We approach investigations with compassion and sensitivity as we realize how difficult it can be for survivors of these violent crimes to share what has happened.
The Sex Crimes detail takes a multi-disciplinary approach in investigating sexual offenses. We work with numerous partners during these investigations including:
The Sex Abuse Treatment Center (SATC)
The Children’s Justice Center of Oahu
The Honolulu Prosecutors Office
We also are also part of the Hawaii SART (Sexual Assault Response and Training) program administered by the Office of the Attorney General.
As Hawaii has numerous military installations, we also work closely with our military partners to investigate crimes that occur on all military bases on the island of Oahu.
We also have a dedicated Victim/Witness Counselor who helps survivors understand the investigative process and guides them through the criminal justice system. The counselor provides crisis counseling, makes referrals to and assists with connecting survivors to other agencies for services as appropriate, and updates survivors on the status of their case.
The Sex Crimes Detail also investigates crimes related to child pornography and violations of privacy involving recording or observing victims in various stages of undress.
