On the night of February 20, 1976, officers responding to a reported shooting in the area behind 94-896 Moloalo Street found 16-year-old Carl Sawyer on the ground, unresponsive. Sawyer had been shot several times and died from his injuries. Earlier that evening, Sawyer was at the Waipahu High School “Jack Rabbit Carnival” with some friends. Sawyer, a junior at Waipahu High School, was described by friends and classmates as well-liked and popular, and investigators were unable to establish a motive for the shooting.
