CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department want to warn the public about a recent gift card scam.
In one case, the complainant received a phone call from a male claiming to be with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The male told the complainant that her social security number was compromised and a bank account was opened in her name. The male then told the complainant that she would receive a phone call from an HPD officer, who would verify the male’s identity. The complainant later received a call from someone spoofing the Wahiawa Police Station’s number and was told to purchase numerous gift cards to protect herself and send the information to them.
Law enforcement agencies, including the HPD, will never contact the public and request gift cards in exchange for services. If you receive this type of call or message, please contact police.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300. The public may now send anonymous web tips to www.honolulucrimestoppers.org or via the P3 Tips app.
