In the early morning hours of September 8, 1986, the body of 21-year-old Gregory M. Yamada was found on what was then a “canehaul road” beneath the H-1 Freeway and Waikele overpass. Investigators determined that Yamada had been beaten and thrown over the side of the freeway. At 6:13 p.m. that same day, an unidentified male was captured on surveillance video using Yamada’s ATM card at the Waianae branch of Honolulu Federal Savings and Loan (Honfed).
