Eight pedestrians have been killed on Oahu roads in the first three months of the year. “This is alarming,” said Maj. James Slayter, Traffic Division commander. “In 2024 there were a total of 19 pedestrian fatalities, and we are already at 8 this year. We all need to prioritize safety. Both drivers and pedestrians should be vigilant, obey traffic signals and signs, and make eye contact.
To help reduce injuries and fatalities, officers from the Traffic Division conducted 18 pedestrian-related operations in March. They went to high traffic areas across the island to educate the public and issue warnings and citations. In total, they issued approximately 300 warnings and 897 citations for violations such as jaywalking, crossing against signals, failing to yield to pedestrians and distracted driving. Eight drivers were arrested for impaired driving, two for driving without a license, and one for an outstanding warrant.
“We hope that everyone will slow down, pay attention and look out for each other,” said Maj. Slayter. “HPD is committed to working with the community to reduce dangerous behaviors that contribute to preventable injuries and deaths.”
