On Prince Kūhiō Day, officers from the HPD’s District 8 Community Policing Team organized and held a community outreach event at Ulehawa Beach Park alongside other community partners. HPD officers provided food and drinks; Oni Onoz Restaurant & Bakery supplied baked goods; Kealahou West Oahu and representatives from Councilmember (CM) Adria Tupola’s office offered services such as shelter assistance and guidance on obtaining identification cards; StandUp Wireless provided free cell phones to qualifying individuals; and Aloha Animal Outreach provided free dog food, microchipping, and vaccinations for pet owners. Also present to show support for this community outreach effort was Prosecuting Attorney Steven S. Alm.
Approximately 100 community members attended the event, and more than 100 hot dogs, chips, baked goods, and water bottles were distributed. Multiple dogs were microchipped, and over 200 pounds of dog food were given out. Ten individuals qualified for and received free cell phones on the spot. Two individuals received on-site approval for shelter services—one was placed with the Homeless Outreach and Navigation for Unsheltered Persons (H.O.N.U.), and another was placed with U.S. Vets. Representatives from CM Tupola’s office assisted with transporting them.
The major successes of the event included community partners coming together to provide immediate on-site services and connecting outreach groups with homeless individuals to ensure continued assistance and support for those in need.
