The internship program is three months long, from mid-January to mid-April, and requires 120 hours.* For half the internship (60 hours), interns get hands-on experience with a patrol district’s community policing team to expose them to and ignite greater interest in the policing profession.  Examples of work assignments with a patrol district’s community policing team include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist in community events like “Coffee With A Cop”
  • Participate in neighborhood security watches and citizen patrols
  • Aid in educational programs like active shooter and senior safety presentations

During the other half of the time, interns prepare for the rigors of the police academy and a policing career with HPD through learning opportunities.  A majority of the learning opportunities will be held at the HPD’s Ke Kula Maka`i Training Academy in Waipahu (93-093 Waipahu Depot Street, Waipahu, HI 96797).  Generally, the learning opportunities will be on weekday evenings or Saturdays.  Examples of learning opportunities include (but are not limited to):

  • Interact with life-size video scenarios in our simulator
  • Experience the same physical fitness assessment that police recruits must pass
  • Observe police patrol activities on a ride-along

To culminate their experience, interns are delegated the responsibility of developing a solution to a community problem in their assigned patrol district with mentorship from the particular community policing team.

*The Pathways Internship Program is currently offered only during the Spring semester.
