Constables Kaaulana and Kaneaia responded to a woman screaming and discovered a male assaulting his wife. The constables attempted to restrain the male. Constable Kaaulana was pushed backwards and knocked out when his head hit a stone threshold. He was also kicked and stomped at that time.
Constable Kaaulana passed away. The male was tried and convicted by a native Hawaiian jury. This is the first documented death of a Law Enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in Honolulu.
