On August 8, 2023, at about 9:00 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision, involving a vehicle and a moped, occurred on Kupuohi Street in the Waipahu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 23-year-old adult female moped rider was traveling southbound on Kupuohi Street, with no lights at a high rate of speed, when she was struck by a 37-year-old adult male motorist executing a left turn into the parking lot of the Circle K convenience store from the northbound turn lane.
As a result of the collision, the 23-year-old adult female moped rider was ejected onto the roadway and subsequently transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The adult female moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 37-year-old male motorists remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, speed appears to be a factor in this collision on the part of the adult female moped rider. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol is a contributing factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
