On July 29, 2024, at about 5:20 PM, a critical hit-and-run motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Farrington Highway, east of Alawa Place, in the Waianae area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a motorist, who has yet to be identified, was traveling westbound on Farrington Highway, when the motorist switched lanes in front of a 53-year-old male moped rider. The sudden lane change caused the moped rider to swerve into the right shoulder, where he then struck a raised concrete curb. The force of the collision ejected the moped rider onto the roadway causing injury.
The unidentified motorist continued to travel westbound on Farrington Highway without rendering aid or providing information. The unidentified motorist was possibly driving a white minivan.
As a result of the collision, the moped rider was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, it is unknown if speed, drugs, or alcohol are factors in this collision.
