On July 16, 2024, the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section was notified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office that the 78-year-old male moped rider involved in this collision had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at The Queen’s Medical Center.
This is the 22nd Traffic Fatality of 2024 as compared to 28 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation remains on-going.

On July 10, 2024, at about 09:57 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred involving a moped and a motor vehicle in the Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 78-year-old male moped rider was traveling eastbound on King Street and attempted to change lanes when he collided with a 47-year-old male motorist.
As a result of the collision, the 78-year-old male moped rider went down and was ejected onto the asphalt roadway where he suffered head injuries. The 47-year-old male motorist was not injured.
As a result of the collision, the 78-year-old male moped rider was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 78-year-old male moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of this collision.
At this time, speed, alcohol, and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
