On March 4, 2025, at about 4:04 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, occurred in the area of Ward Avenue and South Beretania Street in the Makiki area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 32 year-old male motorist was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Ward Avenue and South Beretania Street.
An 81-year-old male pedestrian attempted to cross Ward Avenue within the marked crosswalk and fell to the ground directly in the path of travel and out of the line of sight of the 32-year-old male motorist.
As the traffic signal turned green, the 32-year-old male motorist proceeded to travel northbound and ran over the 81-year-old male pedestrian who was still lying in the roadway.
As a result of the collision, the 81-year-old male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 32-year-old male motorist remained on scene and was not injured.
At this time, neither speed, drugs nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
