**UPDATE**
On February 15, 2023, the Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 31-year-old male operator of the scooter had succumbed to his injuries and died.
This was the 8th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 7 at the same time last year.
This investigation remains on-going.
On February 14, 2023, at about 4:05 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a scooter occurred in the area of Kalihi Street and Palanehe Place in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 54-year-old male motorist was traveling northbound on Kalihi Street, attempting to turn into a private residential driveway.
As the 54-year-old male motorist made the turn, he was broadsided by a scooter operated by a 31-year-old male who was traveling southbound on Kalihi Street at a high rate of speed.
As a result of the collision, the 31-year-old male operator was ejected onto the roadway.
The 31-year-old male operator was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, and he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 54-year-old male motorist was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor in this collision. It was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
