On April 6, 2023, at about 1:35 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a moped operator occurred on Kamehameha Highway in the Haleiwa area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 19-year-old male moped operator was traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway while being followed by a 20-year-old female moped operator.
The 19-year-old male moped operator lost control for unknown reasons and was ejected onto the grass shoulder of the roadway. As a result of the initial collision, the 20-year-old female moped operator collided with the downed moped of the 19-year-old male, at which time the 20-year-old female was ejected onto the roadway.
The 19-year-old male sustained minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. The 20-year-old female was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
Neither the 19-year-old male nor the 20-year-old female were wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
