On August 3, 2023, at about 10:21 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred on the H-1 Freeway eastbound near the Old Waialae Road overpass in the Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 38-year-old male motorist and his passengers were traveling eastbound in the far right lane of the H-1 Freeway when he attempted to slow down to prevent from colliding with a 37-year-old female motorist who was in his path of travel and had slowed down in the lane of traffic due to a flat tire.
As a result of the 38-year-old male motorist suddenly slowing down, he was rear-ended by a 49-year-old male motorist.
The 38-year-old male motorist’s vehicle then traveled into the adjacent traffic lane, at which time the 49-year-old male motorist vehicle continued on and collided with the 37-year-old female motorist.
As a result of the collision, the 38-year-old male motorist and his three passengers were transported to an area hospital. The 38-year-old male motorist and his front passenger, a 38-year-old female, were transported in serious condition, while his rear passengers, an 83-year-old female, and an 84-year-old female, were transported in critical condition.
The 37-year-old female and her passenger, a 39-year-old female, were transported to an area hospital in good condition.
The 49-year-old male motorist was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
