On August 20, 2023, at about 11:36 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred on Kamehameha Highway northbound, near Naniloa Loop in the Laie area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, a 26-year-old male driver and his 29-year-old male passenger were traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway when for reasons unknown, their vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a City and County of Honolulu Transit Bus, which was operated by a 62-year-old male driver who had several passengers on board.
As a result of the collision, both the 26-year-old driver and his 29-year-old passenger were transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 62-year-old Transit Bus driver was not injured however, three passengers aboard the Transit Bus, a 91-year-old male, a 43-year-old male, and a 54-year-old male, were taken to an area hospital in serious condition.
The other passengers of the Transit Bus were not injured or declined medical treatment.
Speed is not a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
