**UPDATE**
On September 20, 2023, at about 11:50 PM, the Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 21-year old male motorcyclist had succumbed to his injuries and died.
This is the 41st Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 37 at the same time in 2022.
This investigation remains on-going.
**ORIGINAL**
On September 20, 2023, at about 7:30 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision, involving a vehicle and a motorcyclist occurred on the H-1 Freeway in the Pearl City area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 21-year-old male motorcyclist was traveling westbound on the H-1 freeway, speeding and weaving through traffic.
As the 21-year-old male motorcyclist attempted to exit the freeway at the Waipahu off-ramp, he suddenly attempted to re-enter the freeway from the exit ramp lane. As the motorcyclist made this maneuver, he traveled through the traffic gore then collided with the safety barrier at the start of the exit ramp and was ejected onto the H-1 freeway, into the path of travel of a westbound vehicle, operated by a 69-year old male motorist where the motorcyclist was struck head on.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 21-year-old male motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 69-year old male motorist and his passengers a 70-year old female and a 13-year old juvenile were not injured.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor to this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
