On Sunday, January 7, 2024, at approximately 3:00 P.M., a critical motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred in the area of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kaheka Street in the Ala Moana area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 29-year-old male motorist was at a stop on Kapiolani Boulevard attempting to make a left turn onto Kaheka Street when he was rear-ended by a 23-year-old female moped operator traveling eastbound on Kapiolani Boulevard.
As a result of the collision, the 23-year-old female careened into the adjacent eastbound lane of Kapiolani Boulevard and was struck by a 52-year-old female motorist and her passenger, a 93-year-old female.
As a result of the collision, the 23-year-old female moped operator was ejected onto the roadway.
The 23-year-old female moped operator was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 23-year-old female moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Neither the 29-year-old male motorist nor the 52-year-old motorist and 93-year-old passenger were injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be a contributing factors of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
