On June 17, 2024, at about 12:01 A.M., a critical motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle occurred on the H-1 Freeway East, east of the Farrington Highway overpass, in the Waipahu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 22-year-old male motorist was traveling eastbound on the H-1 Freeway East at a high rate of speed when his vehicle traveled off of the roadway before going up a grass embankment and going airborne before coming to final rest down another grass embankment.
As a result of the collision, the 22-year-old motorist sustained injuries and was then taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 22-year-old motorist was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
At this time speed appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
