On 9-5-2021, at about 5:00 P.M., the Medical Examiner’s Office called to inform us that the 60 year old male bicyclist had died from injuries that he sustained from this collision.
This is the 33rd Traffic Fatality for the year 2021, compared to 34 at the same time from 2020.
This investigation is on-going.
On August 17, 2021, at about 11:30 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a motorist and a bicyclist occurred near Ala Moana Park Drive and Ala Moana Boulevard in the Honolulu area.
A 26-year-old Honolulu male motorist and his passenger, an 18-year-old mainland visitor, were traveling southbound on Ala Moana Park Drive, entering Ala Moana Beach Park. As the 26-year-old Honolulu male motorist proceeded southbound on Ala Moana Park Drive, a 60-year-old Honolulu male bicyclist traveling eastbound on the Ala Moana Beach Park bicycle pathway entered into the roadway into the path of the 26-year old Honolulu male motorist and at which time was struck and ejected onto the roadway.
The 26-year-old Honolulu male motorist and his 18-year-old passenger were not injured as a result of the collision.
The 60-year-old Honolulu male bicyclist was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 60-year-old Honolulu male bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, nor did his bicycle have any safety equipment at the time of the collision.
The 60-year-old Honolulu male bicyclist was outside of a marked crosswalk when he entered the roadway.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, or alcohol appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
