On Monday, September 11, 2023, at about 6:05 P.M., a critical motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred on Waialae Avenue east of Kalele Road, in the University area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 48-year-old male motorist and his passenger a 46-year-old female were traveling westbound in the left lane of Waialae Avenue when they collided with an 81-year-old male pedestrian who attempted to cross the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk.
As a result of the collision, the 81-year-old male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
Neither the 48-year-old male motorist nor his 46-year old female passenger were injured and they remained at the scene of the collision.
At this time, speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this collision on the part of the male motorist. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are a contributing factor on the part of the male pedestrian.
The investigation is ongoing.
