On July 11, 2023, at about 9:49 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred on Kapiolani Boulevard, eastbound, in the McCully area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 58-year-old adult male motorist, traveling eastbound of Kapiolani Boulevard prior to Pumehana Street, collided with an adult male pedestrian who was crossing Kapiolani Boulevard south to north, not in a marked crosswalk.
The 58-year-old adult male motorist fled the scene eastbound on Kapiolani Boulevard, a witness who observed the collision followed the 58-year-old adult male motorist and called 911. The witness followed the 58-year-old adult male motorist until he was stopped in the Hawaii Kai area.
The 58-year-old adult male motorist was arrested for Failure to Render Aid and Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant.
As a result of the collision, the adult male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
At this time, alcohol appears to be a factor in this collision. It is unknown if speed or drugs are a contributing factors in this collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
