On February 19, 2023, at about 11:53 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred in the Harano Tunnel of the H-3 Freeway (Kaneohe bound).
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 25-year-old adult male motorist, traveling eastbound in the left lane of the H-3 Freeway, swerved to avoid a vehicle stopped in the roadway. As the 25-year-old male motorist veered into the right lane, he collided with a 46-year-old adult male pedestrian conducting traffic control due to an earlier motor vehicle collision.
The 25-year-old adult male motorist continued forward and pinned the 46-year-old adult male pedestrian between his vehicle and a parked vehicle that was in the right lane.
As a result of the collision, the 46-year-old adult male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 25-year-old adult male motorist remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time, speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
