**UPDATE**
On September 15, 2023, the Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 18-year old male motorist had succumbed to his injuries and died.
This was the 40th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 37 at the same time last year.
This investigation remains on-going.
**ORIGINAL**
On September 11, 2023, at about 2:15 AM, a critical motor vehicle collision involving a single vehicle, occurred on Paiwa Street north of the H-1 Freeway overpass in the Waikele area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 18-year-old adult male motorist was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed, when he lost control and collided into the concrete curb and a tree in the center median.
As a result of the collision, the 18-year-old male motorist was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 18-year-old male motorist was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed and alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in this collision. It is unknown if drugs were factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
