On August 22, 2023, at about 8:00 PM, a fatal non traffic motor vehicle collision occurred on the private property of Costco Waipio in the Waipio Area

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 71-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound through the rear back alley way of Costco Waipio when he suddenly accelerated and collided with a forty foot shipping container.

The 71-year-old male motorist would have to be extricated from his vehicle and as a result of the collision he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 71-year-old male motorist was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

At this time, speed may be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors of this collision.

This is the 2nd Non Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 0 at the same time in 2022.

The investigation is ongoing.
