On January 4, 2024, at about 7:44 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred on Kapahulu Avenue north of Castle Street in the Kapahulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 64 year old male motorist was traveling northbound on Kapahulu Avenue just north of Castle Street, when he collided with a 71 year old male pedestrian who was attempting to cross Kapahulu Avenue outside of a marked crosswalk.
The 64 year old male motorist then fled the area, but subsequently returned to the scene.
As a result of the collision, the 71 year old male pedestrian was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 64 year old male motorist was determined to be under the influence and was placed under arrest for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant (OVUII), Negligent Homicide in the First Degree, and Collisions Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury.
At this time alcohol appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. Speed and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors at this time.
This is the 1st Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 1 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is on-going.
