On Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at about 1110 P.M., there was a fatal motor vehicle collision on the Moanalua Freeway westbound prior to the Ola Lane overpass in the Kalihi area.
A 21-year-old Waipahu female and her passengers a 22-year-old Waipahu male and a male who has yet to be identified, were traveling westbound on the Moanalua Freeway at a high rate of speed when their vehicle lost control and collided into the center median.
As a result of the initial collision, their vehicle spun out, and the two passengers were ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway before the vehicle came to final rest colliding with the right side median.
Both the 22-year-old Waipahu male and the unidentified passenger were taken to an area hospital. The 22-year-old Waipahu male in serious condition and the unidentifed male in critcal condition where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 21-year-old Waipahu female was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The 21-year-old Waipahu female was determined to be under the influence at the time of the collision and was placed under arrest for Negligent Homicide in the First Degree, Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant (OVUII) and Driving With Out License (DWOL).
At this time both speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors. It is unknown if drugs were a contributing factor.
This is the 9th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 9 at this same time in 2020.
The investigation is ongoing.
