On May 3, 2024, at about 8:10 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist and a pedestrian occurred in the area of the Moanalua Freeway off-ramp and Kaimakani Street in the Aiea area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 21-year-old male motorcyclist and his passenger, a 22-year-old female, were traveling westbound on the Moanalua Freeway approaching the off-ramp for Moanalua Road.
As the 21-year-old male was traversing westbound, an 88-year-old male pedestrian attempted to walk across the Moanalua Freeway outside of a marked crosswalk into the path of the motorcyclist, and was struck.
As a result of the collision, the 88-year-old male pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both the 21-year old male motorcyclist and 22-year-old female passenger were subsequently ejected onto the roadway as a result of the collision. They were both taken to an area hospital in serious condition.
Both the 21-year-old male motorcyclist and his 22-year-old female passenger were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.
At this time, neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
This is the 11th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 22 during the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
