On February 25, 2023, at about 10:30 PM, a fatal non traffic motor vehicle collision occurred on Bennion Drive in the Salt Lake Area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 61-year-old male motorist was attempting to tow an unoccupied vehicle. As the unoccupied vehicle was in-tow, it became dislodged from the tow arm of the tow truck.
The 61-year-old male motorist inadvertently placed the tow truck into reverse, at which time he collided with a curb to the rear of the tow truck and fell out of the open driver-side door of his tow truck, and was subsequently pinned between the tow truck and the vehicle in tow.
As a result of the collision, the 61-year-old male motorist was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 61-year-old motorist was not wearing a seatbelt and his drivers door was open at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors of this collision.
This is the 1st Non Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 0 at the same time in 2022.
The investigation is ongoing.
