It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that on May 14, 2024, a 66-year-old male bicyclist was traveling eastbound in the bike lane on Kalakaua Avenue when it collided into the opened rear passenger door of a vehicle being driven by a 65-year-old male motorist, who had stopped to let out a passenger.
As a result of the collision, the 66-year-old male bicyclist was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. While at the hospital, the 66-year-old males condition slowly deteriorated.
On May 17, 2024, The Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 66-year-old male bicyclist had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
At this time, it is unknown if speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in this collision.
This is the 12th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 25 at the same time in 2023.
