On April 9, 2023, at about 6:00 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the Makaha area, involving a vehicle and a motorcycle.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 36-year-old male motorcyclist was traveling northbound on Farrington Highway at a high rate of speed. While in the area near the Waikomo Beach Park, the motorcyclist struck a 60-year-old male motorist that was making a U-Turn. The impact caused the vehicle to over-turn onto its side and further caused the motorcyclist to be ejected and struck the pavement.
Although the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, he was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries and died.
The operator of the vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt. He was also taken to an area hospital in critical condition. While at the hospital, his condition deteriorated and was pronounced dead.
Speed appears to be a factor in this collision. It was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors at this time.
This was the 15th and 16th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 16 at the same time in 2022.
