On July 9, 2024, at about 8:59 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred in the area of Kapolei Parkway and Kunehi Street in the Kapolei area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 52-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound on Kapolei Parkway approaching Kunehi Street when a 66-year-old male pedestrian attempted to walk across Kapolei Parkway outside of a marked crosswalk into the path of the motorist and was struck.
As a result of the collision, the 66-year-old male pedestrian was transported via Emergency Medical Service to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 52-year-old motorist remained at the scene and was not injured as a result of the collision.
At this time speed may be a contributing factor of this collision. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors.
This is the 16th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 27 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
