On Saturday, January 28, 2023, at approximately 02:29 a.m., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of Iolani Avenue and Prospect Street in the Punchbowl area.

It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a silver Acura SUV operated by a 35-year-old female motorist was traveling eastbound on Iolani Avenue at a high rate of speed and attempted to overtake a tan Toyota SUV operated by a 59-year-old male motorist.

As the 35-year-old female motorist overtook the 59-year-old male motorist, she sideswiped his vehicle. As a result of the initial collision, the 59-year-old male motorist lost control and then collided with a tree, He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 35-year-old female motorist was subsequently arrested for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and Negligent Homicide in the First Degree.

Speed and Alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this collision. It is unknown if drugs were a contributing factor.

This is the 2nd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 3 at the same time in 2022.
