On April 25, 2023, at about 9:40 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred involving a bicyclist on North Nimitz Highway in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 20-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound onto North Nimitz Highway, from the H-1 Freeway off-ramp, when he collided with a 68-year-old male bicyclist who was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of North Nimitz Highway. The 68-year-old male bicyclist was ejected onto the roadway.
As a result of the collision, the 68-year-old male bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 68-year-old male bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time, speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be a factor on the part of the 20-year-old-male motorist. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors on the part of the 68-year old male bicyclist.
This is the 21st Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 18 at this same time in 2022.
The investigation is ongoing.
