On May 30, 2021, at about 12:13 A.M., there was a critical motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian near the intersection of Koko Head Avenue and Waialae Avenue.
A 52-year-old male was operating a passenger van and turning northbound onto Koko Head Avenue from Waialae Avenue. The vehicle struck a 21-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing Waialae Avenue in a marked crosswalk.
At the time of the collision the weather was clear and there was street lighting.
As a result of the collision, the 21-year-old male was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
Speed and drugs did not appear to be contributing factors. It appears that alcohol may have been a contributing factor for both the driver and pedestrian. The investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE: On June 8, 2021, the Medical Examiner’s officer contacted the Vehicle Homicide Section. The pedestrian involved in this traffic collision died.
This is the 24th traffic fatality for 2021 (8th pedestrian), compared with 19 (6 pedestrians) at the same time last year.
